AEGEA BARCLAY knew from a very young age that she wanted to be a painter. Growing up she spent most of her life between Southern California and the Pacific Northwest. Inspired by the places she lived and the experiences of her life, Aegea began painting her interpretation of the world through color fields of interlaced colors and linear, geometric patterns.
Aegea graduated from Cornish College of the Arts with a BFA in Painting in 2007. She began to develop her signature collection during her senior year at Cornish, where her own personal identity as a painter came into fruition. The dripping lines of paint overlaid with the juxtaposing of urban geometric shapes formed into a new appreciation for the interaction of color and the emotion of life.
Right after graduating from Cornish, Aegea opened her own Gallery, Aegean Design Gallery on Queen Anne Hill, in Seattle. Here, Aegea had at least two Solo Shows a year with an overwhelming amount of support and success in Washington. This has lead Aegea into many private collections and commissions all over the country.
“Aegea is one of the most creative and inspired painters I know. I absolutely love her work!”
My process starts with a color. I choose a color and from there the painting can be born. I never preplan my paintings or draw out how I see them. It comes from intuition. I am a colorist; this is my special gift in life. I want my work to feel balanced. It almost becomes a puzzle for me. To see which line goes where and what color fits the space. I appreciate random, because in life nothing is really planned. I follow my instincts and trust that each step I take will end in a final product I am proud of and can reveal to the world.
I always work on more than four or five paintings at a time. I like to turn from one painting to the next, as different as they can be and challenge myself on how I will make them work and complete them. It truly is a special feeling, when you work hours upon hours on a piece and by the end you have created something that no one else can. It is an Aegean Design original always and forever.

My art is a window into my heart, a place where color and line define memories of my past, present and future. Layers upon layers that express my many experiences in life. This is a way for you to step back and look through my eyes. To find a new appreciation for how color interacts and how powerful color is for the soul. My vision is like a kaleidoscope, no matter how many times you change the patterns or color, it will always have an endless dimensions.
